LUCKNOW: About 100 people from Uttar Pradesh, who were evacuated by the Indian government from war-torn Sudan under
Operation Kaveri, arrived in India over Wednesday and Thursday with at least 70 being brought back to their home towns by the state government.
Another flight, expected to carry many persons from UP, is expected to land in Delhi on Friday.
On Wednesday, the state government had set up a helpdesk for persons stranded in Sudan at the office of the state resident commissioner in Delhi.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had asked officials to ensure that every person from UP, who has been evacuated, was brought back to their home town by the state government, free of charge.
The government is taking care of every aspect of their travel from the point they land in India till the time they reach home, from their lodging, food etc.
A senior government official said a team is in touch with the Ministry of external affairs and details of persons from UP who are being brought back is being given with every arriving flight.
"On Wednesday, against 119 persons from UP who were scheduled to arrive in Delhi, 70 finally travelled back. Two buses were arranged for them, one on the Gorakhpur-Deoria route with 36 passengers and the other on the Mathura-Agra-Kanpur-Fatehpur-Prayagraj-Varanasi-Mau-Ballia-Azamgarh route with 27 passengers. Seven passengers chose to travel back on their own," he said.
On Thursday, 37 passengers from UP were scheduled to travel from Jeddah to Mumbai. The government was expected to fly them directly to Lucknow or, if that was not possible, to Delhi and then bring them by bus to UP.
On Thursday afternoon, the bus headed for Purvanchal carrying people who had arrived in Delhi a day earlier, reached Sahjanwa. Out of these, five were from Gorakhpur, 12 from Deoria, 13 from Kushinagar and one from Siddharthnagar.
