1 in 3 heart patients face gastric issues after stent: Experts
Gastric issues after cardiac stent placement
Lucknow: Nearly one in three heart patients develop stomach problems like gas and vomiting after stent placement, sometimes requiring hospitalisation, experts warned. The issue was highlighted at a National Interventional Council conference at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University, attended by around 1,000 cardiologists.Dr Sharad Chandra, cardiologist at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), said 25%-30% of patients develop gastric issues after angioplasty.“Symptoms appear three to four days after discharge. Most improve within one to two months, but should not be ignored,” he said.Dr Gaurav Chaudhary said contrast dye can cause abdominal pain, gas, indigestion or vomiting, while anti-clotting and infection drugs may irritate the stomach. He advised timely OPD care or admission if needed.Dr Bhuvan Chandra Tiwari, head of cardiology at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, said patients with existing digestive issues are more vulnerable. “Most symptoms are temporary, but should not be ignored. Stopping medicines or relying on home remedies can worsen the condition,” he said, advising light food, adequate water, regular medication and rest.
