1 held after assault video goes viral

Lucknow: A video of a man accused of mobile theft being brutally assaulted with a belt after being stripped naked in Kotwali police station area of Deoria has gone viral on social media. One person has been arrested in this connection.
In the footage, the victim later identified as Chandan Kumar, is seen lying face down on a sofa while one man sits on his head, and another mercilessly strikes his private parts and back with a belt. The assailant also records the act on his mobile phone while a third accomplice filmed the incident separately.
The accused later shared the video from multiple social media accounts.
As soon as the video reached the Salempur Kotwali police, it created an uproar following which teams were formed to apprehend the culprits.
Late Tuesday night, police detained Rohit Srivastava of Haraiya Ward, who was seen assaulting the victim.
Salempur CO Deepak Shukla said Rohit worked as a cashier at a brick kiln where the assault took place.
Though the victim, a resident of Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur, has not yet filed a formal complaint and police are trying to locate him. Police said once he records his statement further legal action will be taken.
"We have also traced another man spotted in the video and efforts are on to arrest him as well," said Shukla.
