Paddy cultivation resumes at Avalapandy after 3 decades

Cheering up hundreds of local people, paddy seedlings were transplanted at Avalapandy, the kole land that has been remaining uncultivable for the past three decades. KOZHIKODE: Cheering up hundreds of local people, paddy seedlings were transplanted at Avalapandy, the kole land that has been remaining uncultivable for the past three decades. The ‘Nadeel Ulsavam’ was inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan by handing over the paddy seedlings to paddy seedlings to the farmers.
During his inaugural address, Vijayan stressed the need to prevent the shrinking of agriculture land.

Paddy was cultivated in 9 lakh hector land in the state a few years ago and the area has shrunk to 2 lakh hector, said the chief minister.
He also urged the public not to waste cultivable land by using it for other purposes. The state government is doing the best to increase agriculture productivity, he added.
The total productivity of paddy in the state is only 15 per cent of the total demand, the chief minister said, adding that the government had already mooted various projects to improve the situation.
The chief minister also urged the public to protect and conserve water. The state is facing severe water shortage and every drop of water should be saved to face the situation, he added. Minister for Excise and Labour T P Ramakrishnan presided over the inaugural function.
Resuming of paddy cultivation at Avalapandy and Karuvan Chira in Cheruvannur panchayat was a long pending dream of the local people. Large number of people from different parts of Perambra assembly constituency gathered at Avalapandy to witness the inauguration of the paddy transplanting.

Paddy cultivation was resumed at Avalapandy jointly by Cheruvannur panchayat, agriculture department, Perambra development mission, food security force of Mannuthi Agriculture University, Atma Kozhikode, Cheruvannur Agro Service Centre.
According to K P Biju, president of Cheruvannur grama panchayat, paddy would be cultivated at nearly 400 acres of kole land in the panchayat in the first phase.
