MALAPPURAM: Over thirty thousand people from
flood-affected areas
are still staying in 127
relief camps
across Malappuram district, though there is no heavy rain reported in the district during last two days.
On Monday, 2059 persons who were staying in camps returned to home and 28 camps were closed. A total of 30684 persons of 8190 families are staying in remaining 127 camps. Among the total number of inmates 12082 are women and 6665 are children. 35 relief camps in
Tirur taluk
recorded highest number of inmates when Ponnani taluk recorded second highest with 2983 inmates. All relief camps functioned in Perinthalmanna taluk were closed by Monday.
Higher education minister K T Jaleel will attend a review meeting to be held at Malappuram on August 23. Local body representatives and officials will attend the meeting.
Meanwhile, the statistics with Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) says that a total estimated loss of the board in Malappuram during flood is Rs 1.74 crore. 158 high-tension electric posts and 1628 low-tension posts were damaged during the South-West monsoon started on May 25.
The statistics of agricultural department says that the district suffered loss of Rs 12 crores in the rain. Plantain farmers are worst hit as around 46 lakh plantain trees were damaged in the heavy rain and flood. The Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi carried out cleaning works in Malappuram municipality.
