Officials seize 250kg stale food from hotels

Kozhikode: Kozhikode corporation health officials here on Tuesday seized stale and substandard food items during an inspection conducted covering three hotels and a makeshift eatery.

Substandard and expired food items weighing 250kg, including chicken, beef, prawns, rice, porotta, Chinese masala, pickle, pakodas, fruits and oil were seized during the raid.

Officials said that rotten and inconsumable food items were recovered from Solar hotel, Kottaram road; Five Star Thattukkada at Bypass; Hotel Samovar and Hotel Kirthi.

Dr R S Gopakumar, corporation health officer, said that substandard and inconsumable food items were seized from Hotel Solar and Five Star Thattukada at Bypass. “Food was being prepared in the most unhygienic condition at Hotel Solar. Waste was piled up near the kitchen and surrounding areas. The staff at the hotel lacked personal hygiene. A directive was given to shut down Hotel Solar until all detected anomalies are rectified,” he said.

The other members of the team that conducted the inspection were health supervisor M M Gopalan, health inspectors T K Prakasan and K C Muraleedharan, junior health inspectors K Shameer and Daison.
