New township for landslide victims

Kozhikode: A township spread over 11.4 acres will come at Vazhakkala Estate at Kalladi to rehabilitate the

landslide

victims of

Puthumala

in Wayanad.

The decision regarding finalizing the site of the proposed township was taken at a meeting held at district collectorate at Kalpetta on Wednesday which was attended by Kalpetta MLA C K Saseendran and district collector A R Ajayakumar.

Officials said an eco-friendly township, which will have solar power and rainwater harvesting, is envisaged to rehabilitate the 103 families who had lost their houses in the landslide on August 8.

Two firms have come forward to purchase the identified land at the Vazhakkala Estate, around 7km from Puthumala, and hand it over to the government for constructing houses.

Meppadi panchayat president K K Sahad said they have identified sponsors for building all the 100 houses which will be part of the township. Sahad urged at the meeting to allow the panchayat to carry out the project which can be completed within eight months.

He said the panchayat will approach the state government for reclassification of the identified land.

A people’s committee formed to chalk out rehabilitation is also planning to turn the landslide spot at Puthumala to a memorial that will showcase what the village was before and after the disaster. As buildings cannot be constructed at the site in view of the land becoming unstable, a memorial garden with bamboo groves and featuring photographs of the picturesque area that Puthumala was before the disaster is being planned
