New lease of life for cancer care centre at KOZ Medical College

KOZHIKODE: If everything goes according to the plan, then the North Malabar region will get a dedicated cancer care centre at the Kozhikode Medical college campus. Construction of the on-going tertiary cancer care centre situated next to the chest hospital has been progressing on a war footing.

With the commissioning of the centre spread over 35,000 square feet area, people in the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram, Wayanad, Palakkad, Thrissur and Kozhikode need not travel to Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) at Thiruvananthapuram to avail the treatment.

The five storey building to be set up at the medical college campus will have all the three divisions of oncology such as medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology under the same roof. It will have two modular operation theatres. The centre is being constructed at a cost of more than Rs 44 crore.The centre set up under the National Programme for Prevention and control cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, diseases and stroke (NPCDCS) is being set up utilising both the fund sharing done by the union government and state government. According to the Kozhikode medical college hospital authorities, on an average 5000 to 7000 new cancer cases reports per year.

Advanced treatment and diagnosis equipment at a cost of more than Rs 30 crore will be put up for the diagnosis of diseases at the centre. The medical college already received Rs 4.65 crore SPECT gamma camera. The sophisticated machine helps pinpoint the tumour region and help in the early detection of cancer. It has also received a liner acceleration to carry out millimetre precision radiation therapy at the centre.

Meanwhile, Dr V P Sasidharan, Kozhikode medical college said The centre will cater the needs of people in the Malabar district and will provide advanced treatment at an affordable rate ,'' he said.
