KOZHIKODE: A Maoist cadre was killed in an encounter with police inside a
private resort
at
Vythiri
in Wayanad on Wednesday night. The identity of the deceased has not been officially confirmed by the police, but it is believed that it was
C P Jaleel
, a native of Pandikkad in
Malappuram
who was killed in the firing.
The Maoist squad consisting of five members arrived at the resort around 8pm on Wednesday and demanded money and food from the workers. While the two members of the squad were engaged in argument with the resort staff, police arrived at the spot following a tip-off.
Thunderbolt, the anti-Naxal commando wing of
Kerala police returned fire and one Maoist died on the spot. The body was kept at the resort while senior police officers and revenue officials were holding a meeting. The body would be sent for post mortem examination at Kozhikode Medical College later.
Jaleel was the brother of C P Ismail, the Maoist arrested along with senior leader Murali Kannamballi in Pune in 2016. Ismail is currently in judicial custody in Pune.
