Kozhikode: Books to ward off lockdown boredom in Ulliyeri grama panchayat

, Arachar, and many other books will help the people spending their days in home quarantine to get rid of their boredom. Ulliyeri grama panchayat authorities in the district have introduced ‘Pusthaka Changathi’ an innovative initiative to help the residents of the grama panchayat.

All those in home quarantine will get books of their choice to nurture their reading habit during the home quarantine period. The books collected from individuals and libraries are being distributed to the persons in isolation.

The persons in home quarantine can give the details of their favourite books and ward level committees will collect the books and hand over the books to the beneficiaries, said Shaju Cherukavil, panchayat president. We will collect the books back only after the end of the quarantine period of the persons, he said.

The grama panchayat authorities have so far collected 350 books for distribution among the people under isolation. According to the figures, as many as 343 people in the grama panchayat are under quarantine.

The panchayat authorities are planning to continue the project till the end of the lockdown period. If anyone remains in quarantine even after the lockdown period, the authorities will cater to their needs and continue the distribution of books.

“A major share of the books were collected from individuals,” said the panchayat president. We depended on the library to get a few books of the choice of the persons, he said.

Apart from warding off boredom, the Pusthaka Changathi project also aims to develop reading habit among the residents. The books of different genres were collected to match the taste of readers.

The books of M T Vasudevan Nair, M Mukundan, K R Meera,

Vykom Muhammed Basheer

, Madhavikkutty and others contribute a major share of the books collected for distribution. The initiative aims to encourage many to spare some time for reading, the panchayat president said.
