Kozhikode: Beautification work of Mananchira Square begins

Mananchira Square

The developmental work worth Rs 2.85 crore will be initiated in a phased manner for Mananchira, the lone green space situated in the heart of the city.

Of the Rs 2.85 crore, Rs 1.70 crore is aided by the district tourism promotion council, Rs 30 lakh of city corporation and remaining Rs 85 lakh has been provided by the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. Vadakara-based Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) will complete the developmental works in four months.

The existing broken compound wall will be repaired and a new entrance gate on the eastern side of the maiden will be constructed for easy access. A pathway will be set up inside the maiden to help those who wish to go for a walk.

Separate toilet blocks for men and women with lockroom facility will be introduced inside the square. The toilets and lockrooms will be on the pay and use basis. Rain shelters will also be placed on the Maiden.

Decorative lights will be installed around the Mananchira maiden to make it look more attractive during the night hours.

The musical fountain situated on the adjacent Ansari Park will also be renovated. Landscaping and beautification works will be initiated on the entire Mananchira Square. An open air stage will also be constructed at the square.

District collector U V Jose, deputy mayor Meera Darshak, MLA Dr MK Muneer, councillor Jayashree Keerthi, architect R K Ramesh and ULCCS representatives attended the function.
