KANNUR
: The central government decision that the state governments can decide the fine for the vehicles under the
Motor Vehicles Act is a welcome one, said
Transport minister
AK Saseendran.
Kerala had mooted this request earlier and the state is happy that the centre has given the right to the respective states to decide the fine.
There was huge protest against the increased fine following which the state governments have been given the right to decide the fine amount. Gujarat government has already slashed the rate, after the new Act gave states the power to lower the penalties. Till the government order is issued the measures would not be stringent, said the minister here on Wednesday. Once this order is issued by the centre, follow up action would be taken accordingly, he added.
The minister had earlier asked the transport secretary to study the issue of increased fine and submit a report. Once this report is submitted a high-level meeting would also be held, he said.
