Kannur: Mayor P Indira allegedly sustained injuries during a scuffle which erupted amid a protest organised by LDF workers in front of corporation office on Tuesday. The mayor was later admitted to district hospital.
The incident happened around 9.45am when the mayor attempted to enter the office while LDF workers were staging a protest alleging that the corporation was trying to obstruct developmental activities initiated by utilizing MLA fund of minister Kadannappalli Ramachandran.
As the mayor and UDF members attempted to enter the office premises, a scuffle broke out with the demonstrators, during which she reportedly suffered injuries.
Despite the incident, Indira chaired the council meeting at the corporation hall. However, she later developed physical difficulties and was admitted to the hospital. Following the incident, UDF workers staged a sit-in-protest on the road.
IUML district president Abdul Kareem Chelery said the attack on the mayor was condemnable. LDF workers were trying to hide the ineffectiveness of minister Kadannappalli Ramachandran by creating violence, he added.
Meanwhile, LDF leadership claimed that the mayor was not assaulted. She suffered injuries after accidentally hitting a metal barricade while entering the premises, they said.
