Padmarajan, who filed his nomination papers on the first day of nomination for the byelection, said that he would file nomination in the byelection in Palakkad assembly election on Saturday.

Padmarajan had contested in the 2019 Parliament elections from the Wayanad seat against Congress's Rahul Gandhi and got 1,887 votes. This time he will be contesting against Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Though victory eluded him in all the earlier 243 electoral contests in the last 35 years, the homeopathy doctor, currently residing at Mettur near Salem, is undeterred. He said his mission was to spread awareness among people that Indian democracy empowers all citizens to take on even the mightiest individuals through the ballot route.

Padmarajan made his first electoral foray in 1988 driven by curiosity in the assembly election for Mettur constituency as an independent candidate against CPM's M Sreerangan. He was just 30 years old then. He contested in the 2024 Parliament polls from Thrissur seat.
