IUML leader Randathani’s dissent sparks LDF interest

Kozhikode: IUML's former MLA from Tanur, Abdurahiman Randathani, came out against the party's decision to field PMA Sameer in Tirurangadi, creating political ripples in Malappuram. After his outburst, LDF is now exploring the possibility of fielding him as an independent.

Randathani, a prominent IUML voice in TV debates and the party's state secretary, questioned Sameer's candidature through a Facebook post. He said the opinion of party committees was not considered while taking this decision. He alleged vested interests drove the choice and that ‘innocent Thangals' were used to serve certain interests.

Referring to Tirurangadi's political legacy, once represented by leaders such as A K Antony, Avukadar Kutty Naha Sahib and U A Biran Sahib, Randathani said selecting Sameer, a relatively recent entrant in politics, raised serious questions. Sameer, a company secretary by profession and former finance director of Chandrika, is a member of IUML's state secretariat.

"This was done without a demand from panchayat or municipal IUML committees or grassroots-level workers and deserving candidates were overlooked. If those who love the party question such decisions, it should not be seen as indiscipline. Those who work tirelessly for the party have the right to express their feelings," he said.

Sensing an opportunity, CPM leadership quickly reached out to Randathani and its district secretariat decided to explore ways to capitalize on the emerging dissent within IUML. However, Tirurangadi seat has already been allotted to LDF ally CPI, which had announced Ajith Koladi as its candidate. Now, CPM is waiting for formal confirmation from Randathani.

There are indications that LDF may shift sports minister and Tanur MLA V Abdurahiman to Tirur as he has not begun campaigning in Tanur even though his candidature was announced days ago.

Addressing the media, Randathani did not clarify whether he would contest with LDF backing but confirmed that LDF leaders had contacted him after his Facebook post. He said he had cordial relations with local CPM leaders and that he only expressed his feelings as a party worker.

CPM politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who attended the district secretariat meeting, said Randathani defended IUML during difficult times, making his dissent significant. He added that LDF would explore how the discontent in IUML over candidate selection could benefit LDF.

"A situation appears to be emerging where IUML may not remain united. If that happens, we will respond to it positively," he said.
