Alappuzha: A 25-year -old youth and his cousin from Edathua were arrested by Alappuzha police for killing their two friends .
The arrested have been identified as Mobin Mathew, (Manu), Kanchikkal House, Pacha, Edathua and his cousin Jeffin Joseph Mobin, who were arrested for killing their friends Madhu, 40, Thakazhi, and Linto (Varghese Ouseph), 26, Thakazhi.
Jeffin had helped the main accused in executing the second murder. The
murder was executed after consuming alcohol and drugs, the police said.
The main accused Mobin said that he and Linto killed Madhu after watching the Mohanlal starrer crime thriller Drishyam over 17 times. Later, Mobin killed Linto because he was witness to the murder. According to district police chief K Surendran, Madhu contacted Mobin’s sister many times and Mobin didn’t like it. “On April 19 night, Mobin, Madhu and Linto got together with friends and drank together. After everyone left the house, Madhu, Linto and the main accused Mobin continued to drink. At that time, an inebriated Madhu shone a torch light on Mobin's face. This prompted Mobin and Linto to attack Madhu, who was strangled to death by the duo using an insulated cable, '' said the police chief.
The police later decided to subject Linto to a lie-detection test. This scared Linto who told Mobin that he will tell cops the truth. But Mobin told Linto that they were safe and the police would never catch them for want of evidence. But Linto insisted on spilling the beans. Mobin therefore sought the help of his cousin Jeffin to kill Linto. On June 10, Mobin killed Linto with the help of his cousin after bludgeoning him with a blunt instrument and dumped his body in the bushes in an isolated area near Thakazhi Railway crossing. On September 19, Linto’s remains were found in the bushes. Ambalappuzha police registered a case in connection with the remains on September 19 and the police confirmed the remains as those of Linto after a DNA test.
Mobin confessed to the police that he and Linto had watched Drishyam film seventeen times in order to destroy evidence of Madhu’s murder.
