Kozhikode: An uneasy calm prevailed in Nadapuram and neighbouring areas on Thursday, a day after five men sustained injuries in an explosion.
This incident has given the UDF a reason to highlight its argument of political violence by the CPM. If the Left was using ‘corruption’ to unsettle the UDF bandwagon, the latter has resurrected this issue to unleash a counter attack.
Police suspect that CPM sympathizers Linesh of Naripatta, Vivek of Payamthongu, Linesh of Chelakkad, Jineesh of Vanimel and Vijesh of Theruvamparamba were injured while they were making crude bombs at Theruvamparamba in Nadapuram around 9.30pm.
“We recovered 11 steel bombs and materials used for making explosives,” said Karuppaswami, ASP, Nadapuram.
Interestingly, party district secretary P Jayarajan had allegedly made a speech a few days ago that the CPM would repay all its debts, referring to the political violence in Kannur. Home minister Ramesh Chennithala alleged that Jayarajan’s statement was verified as CPM workers were making bombs when Wednesday’s accident happened. “The CPM should explain whether their workers were following Jayrajan’s ‘debt repayment’ call,” he wrote on Facebook.
Theruvamparamba had witnessed violence in 2001, after suspected CPM workers allegedly molested a woman. Though the accused in the case were later acquitted, it became a campaign issue against the CPM in the run up to the 2011 assembly elections.
Nadapuram had witnessed widespread violence and arson which eventually led to the murder of CPM worker Enthullathil Binu in June 2001.
Five IUML workers were killed in 2010 while making bombs at Narikkatteri.
KPCC president V M Sudheeran said CPM was not ready to abandon violence. Meanwhile, BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan said that CPM was trying to sabotage the election.
