Congress leader
M Kamalam
, 94, passed away on Thursday morning in Kozhikode. Entered in active politics at an age of 20 years, Kamalam was the minister for cooperation in the K Karunakaran ministry from 1982 to 1987. She started her political career as the councillor in
Kozhikode Corporation
.
She was the convener of the women's wing of Congress and state general secretary of the party. She also served as the state vice-president of the party and chairperson of the
Kerala State Women's Commission.
She resigned from Congress in protest against the declaration of emergency in 1975. She joined the
Janata Party and contested Lok Sabha elections in 1977 unsuccessfully.
Kamalam later returned to the Congress.
She was married to late Mambatta Samikutty. Her last rites will be held at the
Mavoor
Road crematorium in the evening.
