Children turn teachers for the elderly as part of ‘Nanma Veedu’
Alappuzha: It is a usual scene during Vijayadashami Day, seniors and mentors initiating small children into the world of letters. However, you can see a different scene if you come to Kadakkarapally Government
The nine-year-old students began this programme by teaching 97-year-old Kumaranappuppan, a former student of the school, English, Hindi and Computer on Vijayadashami Day.
Over 100 elderly people of Kadakkarapally grama panchayat were selected for being taught Computer, Hindi and English. Now, the first batch of seniors have started to attend the learning programme and they have to attend the class for one day every week.
The classes are being led by the fourth standard students of this school. The classes are being held in the AC computer lab of the school and the lab has over 16 laptops. The elderly between the age of 60 and 100 are attending the courses being led by the nine-year-old students. In the first phase, they were taught the alphabets of English and Hindi and they were made familiar to the laptops.
“The school had started a programme named ‘Nanma Veedu’ two years ago. The intention of this initiative is to make the students good human beings, kind to nature and fellow beings. It also helped them learn farming, how to conduct group studies and how they could become the protector of nature, water and environment and their responsibilities to the society.
Presently, this LP school is one of the top government schools in Alappuzha. Around 14 years ago, this school was an uneconomic one and had only 80 students. Now every year the number of students increases in this school. In the last academic year, the school had 285 students and now it has 310 students belong to the families of farmers, coir and construction workers.
