KOZHIKODE: Customs officials seized 3.2kg of gold valued at Rs 90 lakh and unaccounted foreign currency worth Rs 33 lakh from two passengers in separate seizures at Karipur Airport on Thursday.
The gold was seized from the baggage of K P Midlaj, 24, hailing from Kinalur in the district who had arrived at the airport from Gulf. He was intercepted by customs officials at the exit gate of the international terminal.
The gold was found concealed inside a high pressure car wash pump in his baggage. When cut opened, the gold was found inside the motor of the pump.
In another incident, customs officers seized unaccounted foreign currency worth Rs 33 lakh from a passenger bound for Dubai. According to officials the foreign currency was seized from C M Shyju, 31, hailing from Vengara in Malappuram.
The currency comprised UAE dirhams, Saudi riyals and Kuwait dinars. It was concealed inside a cardboard carton containing jackfruit and mangoes.
The seizures were made by a team comprising customs assistant commissioner, E S Nidhin Lal; superintendents, M Praveen, C Gokuldas, C J Thomas, among others.
