Members of the Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad have parked themselves in front of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education office on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road for the past one week, demanding the resignation of Board president Haraprasad SamaddaR. They hold him responsible for the Madhyamik results goof-up. Most secondary teachers’ organisations have also demanded his resignation.
Samaddar clarifies his stand to Jhimli Mukherjee Pandey.
How come students get to see Madhyamik results on the Net much before they were officially declared?
The CD containing the results were handed over to Calcutta Telephones on May 21 night. That afternoon I had faxed a letter to the CT office instructing them to release the results on the net half-an-hour after I officially announced it on May 22. They had misplaced that fax and hence my instruction was not communicated. CT hence released the results on May 21 night itself. As a result many students, who logged on to the net saw their results much before they were officially announced. When I got to know about this at 10:30 am on May 22, I called CT and asked them to take the results off the net immediately. I even took the CD back and ended the contract with CT. Later the Chief General manager of CT, Sarada Chakraborty apologised about the misplaced faxed letter.
Will you take legal action against CT?
This incident has unnecessarily given me a bad name. People thought that I did not give proper instructions to CT and hence this embarrassing episode happened. Whether the Board will take legal action against CT will be decided in the executive committee meeting on June 5.
But isn’t there also a also a lot of trouble over Madhyamik certificates?
Yes, the date printed on the left hand side of the certificate, March 7, is wrong, I admit. This was the date on which the print order for the certificates was given. I am sorry for the inconvenience and confusion caused to students. I have appealed to students to return their certificates to their respective schools. These will be sent to our regional offices and within three months fresh certificates will be issued. To save the huge expenses this will cause the Board, I have decided to appeal to private sponsors to help out.
The Madhyamik results were declared in 41 days. Do you think that due to this hurry the number of incomplete results is far higher?
I agree that the number of incomplete results this time is higher compared to last year. We have 537 incomplete results this year as against 53 of last year. But when you consider the total number of examinees and the percentage of incomplete results against it, you will find that it is just .05 percent, which is negligible. The results were ready by May 16 but at that time the number of incomplete results were 2,500. I delayed the results by seven days.
