JALPAIGURI: Two days after Munmun Das of Maynaguri’s Dharmapur had given birth to a baby girl at Maynaguri hospital in February, the baby was kidnapped while they were on the way home from hospital. The cops rescused the baby within six days and arrested the lifter.Although 10 months have passed, the mother didn’t even get a glimpse of the baby, who was kept in a Jalpaiguri shelter. After making multiple appeals to the shelter authorities and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) that went unheard, Das, on Tuesday, went to the CWC office in Korok Home, along with several of her neighbours and demanded custody of her baby. “How can they keep my daughter away? They always turn down my appeal,” said Das.Then, CWC asked the home authority to allow Das to see her daughter. “I waited 10 months to see my own baby. God knows when I will get her back,” she said.Chairperson of Jalpaiguri CWC, Baby Upadhyay, said, “A DNA test would prove whether Das is the baby’s mother. But it is up to the police to conduct the test.”
