Woman gangster in cop net

KOLKATA: The woman who led the daringrobbery at a Bishnupur health centre on January 3 was rounded up from her Howrahhome on Sunday. Piu Das (20) was having lunch when the police arrived. "She didnot put up any resistance," said South 24-Parganas SP SiddhinathGupta.Police were on the lookout for her after witnesses to theSamalia Block Health Centre robbery described a woman as being the gang leader.They attacked the health centre on payday, when Rs 6.74 lakh was brought fromthe Alipore Treasury under armed escort. Bishnupur police say the gang waited inthe guise of patients. They struck as soon as the guards left. The robbers wenton the rampage and decamped with the entire amount of Rs 6.74lakh.Police have so far recovered Rs 2.30 lakh and arrested sixpersons. Among the first to be arrested was the owner of a grocery shop close tothe health centre. He was suspected of providing tips to the gang about salaryday details of the health centre. After interrogating the five gang members incustody police were put on the track of Piu. Though she denied her involvementin other crimes, cops suspected her of masterminding some of the most daringrobberies in the district in the recent past.Cops said Piu had beento jail earlier, for the murder of her first husband Asit Mondal of Sarsuna. Shehad ganged up with another woman to kill him.She next married asmall-time trader of Baruipur Nane Pramanik. But that marriage was only a frontbecause she soon tied the knot with Buro Banerjee, a member of her gang. A teamof South 24-Parganas police raided Banerjee''s house at Makurdaha in Howrah, insearch of them. He gave cops a slip.
