KOLKATA: Gouri Chakraborty, whose eye was nibbled at by ants at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital, died around 7.40 am on Tuesday. The family learnt of the death some 20 minutes later.
A 30-strong mob then stormed into the emergency ward and wreaked havoc, dragging out and beating up an emergency medical officer and two onduty house staff. Superintendent Sukumar Das too faced their fury.
"They killed my mother because I lodged a complaint against their callousness. The guilty should be identified and punished immediately," said Gouri's son Pintu.
When asked why the hospital had referred her to SSKM, Das said: "Since SSKM has an ICCU, the doctors felt she should be shifted there. All efforts were made to save her but they failed.
A probe is being conducted and the report will be tabled at the earliest." He also absolved the hospital of all blame, saying multiorgan failure had caused Gouri's death.
The body was taken for post-mortem around 1.40 pm ��� six hours after she died. When asked about the incident, chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee left Surjya Kanta Mishra to face the music.
"I didn't know about the incident. I read about it in the papers. I have asked the health department officials to probe the matter and submit a report," the health minister said.
Gouri, 55, was brought to the hospital for eye surgery. She then suffered renal failure and went into coma. On Monday Pintu found ants had nibbled at her eye,which was bleeding profusely.
His family then lodged a complaint at Bhowanipore PS.
