SANTINIKETAN:

Visva-Bharati

is going through an acute financial crisis, it is “ailing and running on life support”, said the university

vice-chancellor

, Bidyut Chakraborty, at a programme observing

International Mother Language Day

on Friday.

He went on to say, “On October 2, one cannot enter Raj Ghat as it is too crowded, with all thieves, wearing caps, queue up there. But they act in the exactly opposite way of Gandhiji’s ideals throughout the year.”

Claiming how many have been “milking” the university Chakraborty said, “Visva-Bharati has become a goose that lays the golden eggs. Most people here are good but a handful are using social media and other mediums to tarnish the image of Visva-Bharati. Local businessmen even dared to abuse the vice-chancellor and lodge a complaint of sexual harassment against him. But everyone remained silent.” Local traders recently were up in arms after the permission for Poush Mela stalls were distributed online.

The VC criticized a “section of media” for misquoting him. “A part of my speech was fleshed out to stir controversy. Some teachers, too, post adverse comments online,” he said, adding he was not scared of criticism.
