Aleida Guevara, the eldest daughter of four children born to Ernesto "Che" Guevara, visited Jadavpur University along with her daughter Estefania. This is her story
"I am Che Guevara’s daughter, I have grown up with Che Guevara’s ideology... Che Guevara is not just a face on a tee shirt, he is a belief of the heart," said Aleida Guevara, the eldest daughter of four children born to Ernesto "Che" Guevara and his second wife, Aleida March. This is an excerpt from the speech she gave at Jadavpur University while on her visit to Kolkata on January 20th and 21st this year. She was accompanied by her daughter Estefania. Hundreds of people gathered that evening at Jadavpur University to catch a glimpse of the two, and join in on the music and poetry that was being performed in their honour.
This is a podcast where we take you to the very centre of action, of the music, poetry and chanting that ensued when Che Guevara’s daughter Aleida, and granddaughter Estefania visited Kolkata. But Aleida and Estefania were not just visiting Kolkata. The mother-daughter duo has been touring various parts of the country in January, including Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In Kerala, Aleida received the first KR Gouri Amma national award from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. What for, you ask? Outside of being the daughter of Argentine revolutionary Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, Aleida is a trailblazer herself. For starters, she is a practising paediatrician, actively involved with the Cuban Medical Mission. She is also a human rights advocate. She runs two homes for disabled children in Cuba, and two more homes for refugee children who come from troubled families.
