DARJEELING: In 2023, panchayat polls will be held in the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong after a gap of almost two decades.

There have been no panchayat elections in the area since the time of DGHC regime under Subhas Ghisingh.

While the state election commission (SEC) is yet to declare the panchayat poll dates, a section wants it to be held by March to give Trinamool Congress time to strategize for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The state election commission has asked the district magistrates of Darjeeling and Kalimpong to start work on delimiting constituencies, allocating, assigning of serial numbers of seats for panchayats and panchayat samitis and also reservation of seats. SEC wants one seat per 250 voters. The draft delimitation and reservation order is likely to be published in January 2023.
