KOLKATA: During the

academic year

2015-16, more than 1.6 lakh Indians were studying in the US, 25% more than that last year.

India is the second leading country of origin among international students in the US, according to Open Doors Report 2016 on international educational exchange.

To attract more students to the US, 20 US institutions visited Kolkata as a part of an education trade mission to India and Nepal from November 14 to 19. The US consul general, Craig Hall, encouraged the students at the fair organized by US Commercial Service and ELS Language Services of Princeton, NJ. Hall told students the US believed in democracy, tolerance and multi-cultural society. “You can fit in there (US) easily as we believe in the same values,” he said.

Two-year courses at community colleges, lesser known in India, gave students a chance to attain a two-year degree, and enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college or university, officials said.
