ASANSOL: Undertrial prisoners Asansol special jail went on rampage on Tuesday morning protesting against denial of bails due to the ongoing lawyers' strike. They started a hunger strike and struck the jailor, Swarup Kumar Mondal the head with utensils. Later, a huge police force from Asansol South police station reached the jail and brought situation under control.The normal strength of this is about 349, including 342 male and 7 female, but at present about 415 under-trials are staying inside it.After more than one hour undertrial were pushed back inside their respective cells and the hunger strike was withdrawn.

The jailor has lodged an FIR against Seikh Kalu Alam and five others at South Thana. Sunit Halder, sub divisional magistrate of Asansol has visited the jail and asked the jailor to submit report of the incident.Police sources said that more than 300 undertrials belong to the minority community and majority of whom are staying here for more than 60 days. Most of them have committed petty crimes and would have got bail long ago in normal conditions."The situation may worsen if the undertrails are not granted bail before Id," they hinted.
