KOLKATA/KALYANI: A house staff at the College of Medicine and JNM Hospital, Kalyani has lodged a complaint of ragging with the UGC anti-ragging cell, prompting the latter to seek an explanation from the college authority.
The house staff was allegedly assaulted in the college hostel on August 11 and his belongings were thrown out of the room allocated to him. The staff from north Bengal lodged the complaint on August 11 and is no longer living in Kalyani after being threatened, a hospital source said.
Several other house staff, too, told TOI that their belongings were thrown out of their rooms. They said that the hostel committee issued a notice asking the house staff to move out of the hostel on August 8 and the very next day their goods were thrown off without giving them time to shift, one said.
Another senior student alleged that the hostel had been a den of ragging and the officials are aware of it, but they do not take any action. He said that when he had informed the police about ragging, "he was told to approach the principal instead". He could not muster enough courage to lodge a formal complaint. Though another did it, he was asked by the college officials to adjust.
Abhijit Mukherjee, principal, refused any incident of ragging at hostel. He said: "We received the UGC letter on August 12 which did not name the complainant. Our anti-ragging committee replied to it on August 14. The letter was sent by a house staff. But no house staff can stay in the hostel as the rooms are to be allotted to new students. The complainant is not a student. We keep first-year students separately."
Meanwhile, a former BTech student, Biswajit Hazra, who passed out from Ballygunge Science College, also alleged that he had been ragged while he was a student and the police did not take cognizance of his complaint. On Saturday, cops recorded his statement.
