SOUTH 24-PARGANAS: A man in Joynagar, in a fit of rage, flung his two-month-old son to death on Sunday. He fled home immediately afterwards, but was traced by police later in the evening. Basudeb Mondal of Jangalia Mondalpara picked a fight with his wife on Sunday afternoon. After a heated exchange, he picked up the baby, who was sleeping in the cradle, and tossed him on the floor.
The baby died at once and a scared Mondal fled. His wife alerted the neighbours and went to Joynagar police station to lodge a complaint. Mondal was arrested in the evening.
Neighbours said that Mondal, who worked as a daily labourer, would often return home drunk and pick a quarrel with his wife.
In another incident, a sub-inspector was found hanging at his quarters in the Falta police station compound on Sunday. Asim Dutta, 42, lived alone and when his domestic help came in the morning, got no response despite ringing the door bell repeatedly. Finally, she peeped in through a window and saw him hanging from a ceiling fan. She informed the police.
Police suspect that Dutta, a resident of Dum Dum, was suffering from depression for sometime. The body has been sent for autopsy.
