KOLKATA: A 29-year-old actor who worked in Bengali TV serials, Suchandra Dasgupta, died after being crushed by a truck on BT Road at Baranagar on Saturday night. The truck driver was arrested and the vehicle seized.
Dasgupta was an actor in several Bengali shows, including the Biswarup Bandyopadhyay and Mohana Maity starrer 'Gouri Elo'.
According to cops, the accident took place around 10.30pm when Dasgupta, a resident of Sodepur HB Town, was on her way home from a shoot on an app bike.
"The bike driver applied the brakes when a cyclist came in front of the bike. Dasgupta lost her balance due to the sudden jerk and fell off the bike. A truck coming along the same road ran over her," an officer said.
According to witnesses, Dasgupta was wearing a helmet, but it couldn't protect her. Locals took the actor to Baranagar State General Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Local residents put up a road block at Ghoshpara for over an hour, disrupting traffic, and launched an agitation in front of the cops, alleging police inaction against rash driving on BT Road.
A large contingent of police, including RAF and combat force, led by senior officers from Barrackpore Commissionerate, brought the situation under control.
The road block was withdrawn after senior officers assured protesters of taking protective measures.
The incident has left the Bengali TV industry shocked and saddened.
