MURSHIDABAD: Two Trinamool Congress leaders were heckled and beaten up, allegedly by their own colleagues, in Murshidabad's Islampur on Friday evening. TMC Seva Dal Block President Modirul Islam and Youth block Trinamool leader Anarul Islam allegedly beat up district general secretary Mohammed Ali and TMC block youth president Swapan Sarkar as the latter did not invite them to a meeting called to demand the withdrawal of joint forces from Jangalmahal.

The Trinamool youth wing members had called the meeting at Islampur on Friday, in which district president Subrata Saha was supposed to be present. Saha, however, stayed away, reportedly after suspecting that a ruckus would break out.
Mohammed Ali and Swapan Sarkar were wounded after some men beat them up. The latter was seriously injured and had to be rushed to Behrampore New General Hospital. Modirul Islam and Anarul Islam were later arrested by police on the charge of beating up the two leaders, who complained against them. They said that they had not been invited to the gathering, despite holding prominent positions in the district party leadership.
Assistant superintendent of police Deep Narayan Goswami said: "We arrested the duo on the basis of a complaint."
