6 dead as bus plunges 100ft, lands on Teesta riverbank near Rangpo
The deceased were identified as Ikbal Hassan from Kolkata, Gopal J Prasad and Julu Kumari, both from Sikkim, Ajay Tamang from Garubathan and Indrajit Singh from Siliguri. One of the deceased is yet to be identified.
Villagers and workers from a nearby construction site were the first to reach the accident spot. Rescue workers said such was the impact of the crash that many of the passengers were flung 50 metre from the site. The mangled vehicle had to be cut open to recover the bodies of the deceased.
Kalimpong SP Shrihari Pandey said the accident happened near Andheri under Rangpo police station and the injured had been taken to hospitals in Sikkim.
“The driver and conductor are undergoing treatment at Sightam in Sikkim. Some of the injured have been shifted to Gangtok. An investigation has been initiated,” a Sikkim police officer said.
Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang said, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the tragic bus accident that occurred near Bhotey Bhir. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.”
