Tout lynched in Med College
Kolkata: A 40-year-old man from central Kolkata was allegedly lynched inside the night shelter for patients at the Medical College Hospital. The incident took place early on Tuesday.
Three persons, including the caretaker of the night shelter, Gopal Maity, were arrested. Cops said some of the accused are relatives and family members of Covid patients admitted in the hospital. They, however, are on the run. The incident brings back the memory of the lynching of Korpan Shah on the NRS Hospital premises a few years ago.
“The lynching victim, Robin Das, had allegedly taken Rs 3,000 from one of the accused, Susanta Mondal. Das had assured him that he would get a life-saving drug for his son, who is a cancer patient. The money changed hands last Friday. But for the next few days, Das allegedly remained untraceable. When Mondal began to look for him, he allegedly came across relatives of some other patients who, too, had paid money to Das,” said a senior IPS officer from the detective department.
The officer added that Das was a tout operating in the area. After lockdown was clamped, he had initially arranged medicine for several patients and won their trust. On Monday night, Gopal Maity and Mondal could finally trace him.
They asked the relatives of some other patients to join them. The team caught hold of Das and asked him to either return the money or hand over the medicine. When he refused to pay up, saying he was not carrying any cash with him, they got agitated and assaulted him with rods and sticks.
After thrashing him, the group fled the spot, leaving him bleeding profusely. “We first picked up Maity and his incoherent answers made him a suspect instantly. Besides Maity, Mondal and another person, identified as Amit Saha, have been arrested,” added the IPS officer, who is leading the probe.
On receiving information, Bowbazar police reached the spot and shifted the patient to NRS hospital. The victim, however, was declared brought dead. A murder case has been initiated and the cops are investigating the case further.
“We are studying the CCTV footage to identify some of the other attackers. We are also tracing the murder weapons,” said the officer.
