KOLKATA: The South Dumdum Municipality (SDM) officials on Thursday raided 20 famous restaurants across the city after the reports that they were serving unhygienic food.
In a first, Municipality officer Debasish Dutta visited famous "Rang De Basanti Dhaba" at Salt Lake possing as a customer. He ordered chilled lassi but was shocked on finding that the ice used in the drink was earlier used to preserve fish.
Dutta called his team members inside the restaurant.
The officials while issuing stern warning to restaurant manager Somnath Chakraborty, said, "You have been serving this ice to the customers? Change everything within a week or else your trade-license will be terminated."
After "Rang De Basanti", the team went to "Global Bengal Restaurant" and "South Indian Food Restaurant".
"Rotten and fungal infected vegetables were found in the kitchen of Global Bengal Restaurant and South Indian Food Restaurant," the official said.
The team also raided famous Aminia, biryani corner in Koltaka.
"Expired mustard oil, blood-clotted chicken, rotten carrots were seen in their kitchen," the official said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Health Minister Jyotipriya Mullick said, "I have asked for the names of those restaurants. Health department will examine their food."
"I have asked the enforcement branch to raid regularly," Mullick added.
