KOLKATA: Satish and Santosh Babusenan’s “The Painted House” has set a new benchmark for many directors in Tollywood. In January this year, the Babusenan Brothers had fought against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and moved court. Finally, they ended up getting an A certificate for their film without making a single cut or beeping any dialogue.
Tollywood, which has often being plagued with censorship problems, is now seeing this case as an inspiration for fighting its wars with CBFC. Said director Amitabh Chakraborty of “Cosmic Sex” fame, “The Babusenan Brothers have pointed out to us that a film in India can also be passed even if it has full frontal nudity. All these years, CBFC has been living up to the tradition of not allowing films with full frontal nudity. They would insist that doing so is disrespectful towards women. The CBFC guidelines don’t allow scenes that disrespects women. However, disrespecting women is a subjective term that has often been misinterpreted by CBFC to suit its own interest. But winning the case, the Babusenan Brothers have called the bluff of the CBFC.”
In future, if Chakraborty makes a film where he needs to show nudity, he will use the reference of this case to fight his war against censorship. “I will then have the courage to move court in case there is a problem regarding censorship of nude scenes,” he concluded.
