For cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla,
Gopal Bose — a first-class player with an ability to play long innings — will always be his coach for life. “Gopal sir will always be special to me. He not only taught me how to play the game, but also helped me develop this sportsman spirit, which is essential for any player. He was an institute, a living knowledge hub on cricket.
He was my guiding light and that’s how I will always remember Gopal sir,” said Laxmi, adding, “He never tried to impose ideas on me and helped me develop my own style. He was always there to make me and my co-players play better. He used to say that everything has a science behind it. Whether we sleep, eat or play, there is surely a scientific purpose for it. His golden words will be remembered.”
Laxmi debuted under Gopal Bose’s guidance and support, which made his team win the Bengal Vijay Hazare trophy. “The same year, I went on to become the player of the year. Sir kept improving my skills and gradually I started playing as an all-rounder. However, he always told me that No. 6 in Indian Team will be my permanent place if I focus more on my batting. Gopal sir is the reason I came forward and was introduced to world-level cricket under 19. Today in our training school, we have dedicated our dressing room to our beloved Gopal sir. Every year we organize a cricket tournament in his loving memory. To sum it up, Gopal sir was, is, and will always be my mental support. Happy Teacher’s Day, sir,” said Laxmi.
