‘Remove scrap dealers from pavements’
Kolkata: Binod Kumar, the municipal commissioner, will write to police commissioner Vineet Goyal to take effective steps for evicting pavement dwellers to the city’s night shelters that are being run by KMC. Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday said such a step was required as a majority of the pavement-dwellers had taken over the pavements or the space below flyovers to for scrap iron business. “I have found pavements in areas like Chittaranjan Avenue, Syed Amir Ali Avenue, Alipore Road or Southern Avenue taken over by scrap-dealers. I have asked KMC officials to shift them to the nearest night shelters where they will be provided with food and other amenities,” said Hakim. tnn
