KOLKATA: Swapna Kundu is unable to come to terms with her elder son Swapnadip's death and attempted to end her life twice in the early hours of Saturday before her alert brother intervened in time. Arup Kundu, Swapna's brother with whom she, her husband Ramprasad and younger son Ratnadip are currently staying in Ranaghat, said managing her was proving to be a challenge as she has been teetering on the brink since Swapnadip's death on Thursday. "She has been refusing food, breaking into sobs, crying out for Swapnadip. We are concerned about her. During the night, she tried to hang herself twice. Luckily, I was alert and managed to prevent it. But we are all weary from lack of sleep and I am afraid the slightest drop in guard could prove dear for the family," Arup said.According to family members, Swapna has been walking around the house with a doll, calling it "Gopal" - the name with which she used to fondly address Swapnadip.Though Swapna was given pills after two sleepless days, she did not sleep. Instead, she twice tied a cotton towel around her neck and attempted to kill herself.
"We need to take her to a doctor, but given the present situation, it is proving to be very difficult," Arup said over phone.Ramprasad, too, is grief-stricken. But he has been driven to fits of anger rather than depression. He termed his son's death a cold-blooded murder and recalled how Sourav Chowdhury had called and informed him in a calm and composed manner to visit the hospital the day after the incident, advising him not to take Swapna along as she may not be able to bear seeing her son in that condition.Ramprasad further alleged that before his death, Swapnadip's hands and feet had been held by some students while another had rained blows on him with a rod. "There were signs of cigarette burns all over his body. I can't imagine the pain he suffered before he died," he said.
