The motorman applied emergency brakes, but the train stopped only after its front two coaches had passed over the spot where the man had fallen.
“Station staff and RPF personnel saw that the man was still moving. As he was still alive, the train could not be reversed. Power to the third rail was switched off and the man was taken out from under the train. We had already alerted the Metro Railway Hospital in Tollygunge and by 11.05am an ambulance with a doctor had arrived at Netaji station. The injured man was moved to the hospital by 11.15am,” the Metro official said.
Doctors at the hospital, however, could not revive Guha Roy as he had suffered grievous injuries.
“Services were disrupted between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Kavi Subhas till 11.18am. Normal services however continued between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Dum Dum during this period. Members of our staff reacted very quickly and did their best to save the man. It is unfortunate that he passed away,” the official added.
