Sudip Bandyopadhyay faces councillor’s angst; ‘sorted’, says party

KOLKATA: In the face of an unprecedented protest by Trinamool’s ward 49 councillor Monalisa Banerjee at north Kolkata MP and party candidate Sudip Bandyopadhyay’s Subodh Mullick Square election office from Friday, TMC on Saturday said the “issue has been resolved”.

Sudip, who also heads TMC’s North Kolkata unit, spoke to the councillor in the morning. Monalisa and her aides withdrew their agitation after around 15 hours.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said: “Whatever has happened is undesirable. Our councillor Monalisa is a very effective worker. She had some grievances for which she wanted to speak to Bandyopadhyay, who also heads our North Kolkata party unit. Sudip-da met her and the matter has been resolved. Yes, it would have been better if this did not happen in the first place, but since it did, the party has addressed it and it is now over.”

Responding to barbs by BJP candidate Tapas Ray that the councillor’s agitation wasn’t a one-off case in north Kolkata, which is “riddled with factionalism”, Ghosh said: “The party leader is Mamata Banerjee, the general is Abhishek Banerjee. Sudip-da has been entrusted by the party to look into north Kolkata. There is no factionalism. We are all one.” Monalisa’s grievance was that she was not being allowed to work in her constituency by a Sudip aide. While Sudip did not react, the aide, when asked by reporters, denied all charges. tnn
