As a result, thousands of railway commuters were stranded at different stations as trains stopped moving after the landslide. A railway accident, however, could be averted as the landslide under the track was timely detected by the railway employees.

According to local sources, the subsidence occurred after the Up Sealdah-Bongaon local train had passed through the track near Sanhati railway station between Habra and Maslandapur stations around 7.08am on Friday. The services resumed around 9.30am on Friday. “After 9.30am, both Up and Down train movements were normal. Eastern Railway completed the restoration work within minimum time. As a sequel to this, four EMU locals had to be cancelled and two EMU locals were short-terminated,” said Kaushik Mitra, CPRO, Eastern Railway.

“The railway employees found a one feet-long and 30-feet wide subsidence about three feet away from the Up railway line. Soon after the landslide was detected, the railway employees started repairing the tracks on a war footing manner. The train services on Up line were also stopped immediately while several trains were stranded at different stations on the Sealdah-Bongaon section,” said a GRP official.

Railway crew immediately rushed to the site to restore the bank of the railway tracks. After the work train movement through Up line between Habra and Maslandapur resumed, but at a restricted speed. Down line train movements were, however, unaffected.
