RG Kar Hospital rape-murder: Kin, students slam door on parties, netas

KOLKATA: In a rare show of resistance, students, doctors and even the family members protesting against the brutal rape and murder of the PGT doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital last week, have managed to keep out involvement of any political party in their organised as well as impromptu protests so far.

Starting from Friday after the horrific incident had come to light, students of R G Kar Medical College, while staging protests against hospital authorities, cops and demanding justice for their colleague, have put up a brave resistance against all political parties alike despite all of them making an attempt to hijack the issue by sending top-ranked functionaries to the hospital with party banners to join the issue.

“From day 1, we have maintained our stand. We don’t want to politicise this issue. We are not here for any personal gain but are protesting to seek justice for our friend and batchmate. We also want to make the place safer for our fellow juniors and colleagues. Allowing political parties’ entry to our platform will dissolve the very reason for the protest,” said a second-year PGT doctor at R G Kar who has been at the helm of the protests since Friday.

In fact when a large team of BJP supporters armed with saffron flags and led by Agnimitra Paul had approached the R G Kar main gate on Friday, the students pushed them back. Similar pushback operations continued through Saturday and Sunday when CPM and Congress had tried to join in.

Another post-graduate trainee doctor at R G Kar said, “We don’t want support from any political party because we want justice against this brutal incident.”

When Kamduni protestors and popular BJP faces Tumpa and Mousumi Kayal visited the girl’s home at Sodepur, the family refused to entertain them while pleading before them not to do politics over the issue. ‘No politics please’ was also the slogan at all doctors’ and citizen forums’ rally from College Square to RG Kar Hospital on Monday.
