KOLKATA: Some artefacts from Bhabani Charan Laha’s collection might have reached the hands of curio collectors, suspect investigators. The arrested burglars reportedly told the sleuths that they had sold some of the artefacts. Police have recovered more than 40 stolen antiques so far.
"The Laha family has given us a rough list of their missing artwork and not an accurate one.
We suspect the burglars had stolen some antiques,’’ an investigator said.
On Sunday, police recovered 10 more artefacts, including a few European and Chinese ones. They strongly believe that apart from antique trader Sandip Chowdhuri, who has been arrested for the Lahabari theft, another trader and a big art dealer are also involved in the burglary. "This art dealer probably managed to hand over some of the artefacts to his clients. The person who might have masterminded the crime had probably fixed his buyer before the operation,’’ another sleuth said.
CID officers will also grill the arrested burglars, who have reportedly confessed to having conducted similar operations outside Kolkata. "We have some undetected antique theft cases as well. The gang may have been involved in those thefts,’’ a CID officer said.
Meanwhile, officers from the anti-burglary section solved a burglary that occurred at a house on Padmapukur Road in the wee hours of November 22. Burglars had sneaked into the residence of Chandan Saha after a breaking a window and fled with gold ornaments, watches and a digital camera.
Police nabbed Binod Das and recovered some jewellery and the camera. "We are looking for another person,’’ said Damayanti Sen, DC-DD.
