A letter written by one of his henchmen, found at his cell during a raid by jail officials gave out the escape plot.
He had estimated that Rs 5 lakh would be needed to bribe policemen and politicians to carry out the plan. The discovery of a room heater in Singh’s cell during a routine check had prompted the raid. Inspector general (prison) Jaidev Chakraborty said a detailed probe would be conducted by deputy inspector general (security) Ashoke Dhar.
During interrogation, Singh told jail officials that he managed to bribe a section of prison staff to get items of comfort. The probe revealed that he maintained contacts with his gang over a cellphone and chalked out the plan.
