Kolkata: Senior officers of Bidhannagar police’s traffic department hit the road on Monday to manage the traffic along the newly developed school hubs at New Town, Mahisbathan and Salt Lake as campuses reopened after the summer vacation.
Four popular schools that have come up in New Town and Mahisbathan in Sector V posed challenges to Bidhannagar City police, who previously had to deal with only schools in Sector V.

But the scenario has changed in last few years with DPS New Town, DPS Megacity, New Town School and Salt Lake Siksha Niketan School drawing a large number of students from all parts of New Town, Salt Lake, Rajarhat, Baguiati and large parts of extended north Kolkata
As schools reopened on Monday, the narrow lanes leading to them have started becoming nightmare for commuters as cops rolled out a slew of traffic restrictions, including no parking on road sides and random U-turns, but continued to struggle with the convergence of hundreds of cars to first drop children in the morning and then again to pick them up in the afternoon.
“The road between Rabindra Tirtha to DPS New Town school was chock-a-block in the morning and afternoon hours,” said Anindya Sarkar, a New Town resident.
To ensure smooth traffic flow, cops said they sent only northbound cars along the road between Rabindra Tirtha and DPS New Town.
“We have deployed a large number of officers outside all major schools,” said a senior officer of the commissionerate. A senior official of DPS New Town said they were cooperating with the cops to ensure smooth circulation of traffic around their school.
