Spl court remands Chandan in judicial custody till Mar 2

Kolkata: The special CBI court in Alipore on Tuesday remanded Trinamool Bagda functionary Chandan Mandal in judicial custody till March 2. Mandal is an accused in the illegal school recruitment case.
The CBI submitted to the court that Mandal had handled Rs 16 crore, collected from aspiring candidates through agents. The agency has summoned one such agent and former SSC employee Shyamal Sen for questioning.
CBI prayed for Mandal’s judicial custody, pleading that he was an “influential” person and claimed that he had played “a crucial role” in illegal appointments. It said that he had collected money even after the expiry of the recruitment panel on May 18, 2019. Recommendation letters were allegedly issued to unsuccessful candidates against such vacancies and memos issued to make appointments legal. The memos had numbers of regional commissions and scanned signatures of chairpersons. None of the chairpersons were aware of the acts, the CBI claimed.
The agency also submitted that it had come across bank transfers made to Mandal’s account by ‘undeserving’ candidates. The money was later routed to several accounts of “suspect persons”. Mandal tried to tamper with the evidence while probe was on, CBI claimed.
While granting CBI’s prayer, judge Arpan Chatterjee wanted to know why the agency was not keeping Mandal in custody for some more days to question him if he was so “influential”.
