KOLKATA: While CID pointed fingers at one Mewalal Mallik, an employee of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), as the Kolkata link of the skeleton smugglers, the hospital denied that it had any employee by the name.
But Group-D staff confirmed that Mewalal and his younger brother Shivlal were attached to the anatomy department of the hospital.
One of those arrested in Burdwan had named Mewalal. When TOI visited CMCH, staff of the anatomy department denied knowing Mewalal. But, a contract employee said the Mallik brothers stayed in the quarters behind the hospital morgue. However, family members said that the duo had gone out on work. They refused to speak about the skeleton smuggling racket.
“There is one Shivlal Mallik here, but no Mewalal. Let the police trace them first,” said CMCH deputy superintendent A N Biswas.
