Salt Lake gets 4 police chiefs in as many days

yet another new police commissioner, its fourth in the last four days.

In a bizarre game of musical chairs, L N Meena, the police commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur was made the Bidhannagar police chief less than 24 hours after Bharat Lal Meena had been given the job on Tuesday. Bharat Lal Meena had replaced Nishat Pervez, who had on Monday replaced Gyanwant Singh, who had on Sunday replaced the EC-appointed N Ramesh Babu

The police commissioners of Howrah and Barrackpore, too, were changed within days of their appointment. D P Singh, who was made the Barrackpore police chief on Monday was asked to replace L N Meena in Asansol-Durgapur. Gaurav Sharma, SP of Howrah Rural was made the new Howrah police commissioner. Tanmoy Roy Chowdhury, who was asked to replace Vishal Garg as the Howrah police commissioner on Tuesday, was sent to Barrackpore as the top cop on Wednesday.

Bharat Lal Meena was sent back to Siliguri as the police commissioner and Tathagata Basu, who was also transferred to Siliguri as SP on Tuesday, was asked to continue as the Sunderbans SP. Amitava Maity, too, would continue as the Jalpaiguri SP.

The fourth administrative rejig also saw KMDA CEO Sanjay Bansal being made the Darjeeling district magistrate. Joyoshi Dasgupta, the Darjeeling DM, was made the joint secretary of Food and Supplies. Antara Acharya, the former North 24-Parganas DM, who was made the additional secretary, finance was made the KMDA CEO. Dasgupta, meanwhile, replaces Shilpa Gourisaria who has been posted as joint secretary, Finance. Special Commissioner GST at Durgapur Surendra Kumar Meena was made the DM Alipurduar that was lying vacant after Subhanjan Das was made the additional secretary in Panchayat and Rural development.

The state home department on Wednesday also constituted four separate “police” districts - Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, Bongaon and Barasat. Ranaghat and Krishnanagar police districts have been formed by dividing the existing Nadia police district that had 25 police stations under its jurisdiction. Bongaon and Barasat police districts have been formed by dividing the existing Barasat police district that had 16 police stations under its jurisdiction.
